November 2003 29/11/2003 The Cornell Club of Switzerland wil hold its "Annual Meeting and Thanksgiving Event" in Bern. For anyone who wants to join the meeting please contact Juerg Hari.

Please mark your calendars for the 2003 Zinck's Night on Thursday, October 16th. Concurrently with Zinck's night there will also be the inauguration of Cornell's 11th president Jeffrey Lehman.

Klaus and Deloyce Conrad (M.S.'60) of the Munich Chapter are planning to make reservations "Wirtshaus zum Straubinger", Blumenstr. 5 80331 München. Please recognize this change of venue, as proviously the event took place at "Donisl". You may also check the "Straubinger" website for directions. In addition Deloyce Conrad (B.S.'59) may try to reach all Cornellians and Friends in the greater Munich area by e-mail to see who will be coming.

The regular Fall get-together of the Rhein-Ruhr Chapter is coming up and Detlef Rahmann invites all interested Cornellians for September 23rd, 2003, to assemble at the residence of the Brünger Family in Wuppetal at 20:00. Please call or mail Detlef for further information.

Its time again for the traditional(!) summer beer-garden-get-together of the the Munich sub-chapter for Cornell Alumni and Friends. It will take place again at the Hirschgarten Beergarten (within easy walking distance of the S Bahn Station Laim -- yes, this is your chance to leave your car at home and drink as much good Bavarian beer as you like!!!). As last year Klaus and Deloyce Conrad may plan to hold down a table or two starting around 6-7 p.m. In case of rain, we'll reserve a table indoors.

The 12th annual Cornell Weekend of the Cornell Club of Germany will take place this year in Vienna, Autria's capital on invitation of the Austrian Cornell Alumni.

This Vienna Weekend will again be different, especially taking as theme this year "Barock und Biedermeier in Wien", and we all are sure that it will match those recent annual meetings as the excellent meeting last year in Berlin, the very special 2001 on Rügen Island at the Baltic See Shore in Northeastern Germany or the wonderful weekend in 2000 at Lake Constance in Southwestern Germany, as well as those great meetings before (Frankfurt 1999, Dresden 1998, Hamburg 1997, Luxembourg 1996, Ammersee 1995, Bonn 1994, Heidelberg 1993, Wiesbaden 1992).

This years event is beeing organized locally by our Austrian Alumni Julie und Nicholas Simon and the venue will take place at Hotel Mercure Wien City, Hollandstraße 3, 1020 Wien.

1. Application and Fees for Participants

For particpation in this years program a fee fo EUR 160,-- per person with rebates for spouses and children is raised which will cover all meals, bus tours, city guide and entry fees. More details please find in the application form, which you may download here, fill out and send to Wolfgang Fritzemeyer, president of the Cornell Club of Germany.

2. Hotel

For Lodging at Hotel Mercure Wien City Julie and Nick have managed to block 40 Rooms, Price: EUR 89,-- for a single and EUR 109,-- for a double (Price per room and night inclusive breackfast buffet). For the same prices early arrivers can book their rooms for the night from 19.6. to 20.6.

For reservations the participants are asked to directly contact the Hotel, Fax:
0043-1-213-13-230, Telefon: 0043-1-213-130, using the code word "Cornell University". The hotel's offer for the blocked 40 rooms run's out 4 weeks prior to the event. Payment will be individual by the participants. Please make reservations soon (first come, first serve) due to the limited number of rooms

3. The Programme

3.1 Thursday, June 19th, 2003

In the evening there is opportunity to see "La Bohéme" in the Staatsoper; the Volksoper has scheduled "Der Bettelstudent". Ticket reservations can pe done most easily via fax with the Bundestheaterverband (Staatsoper: 0043-1-514-44-2969; Volksoper: 0043-1-514-44-3669). Please do your reservation now as time is running out for advanced tickets. The program for all other Vienna theaters has not been published yet.

3.2 Friday, June 20th, 2003

We will start this years official program (download here) with a "Heurigenabend" that will take place at the Heurigenschank "Zum Martin Sepp", Grinzing, Cobenzlgasse 34. It is planned to go there as a group by public transportation, but anyone who wants to arrive there individually is of course welcome to do so.

Meeting point is at 19:00 at Hotel Mercure Wien City, Hollandstraße 3, 1020 Wien.

The evening dinner will be arranged as a buffet, a typical "Heurigenessen". A major part of the evening program will be perfomed by Dr. Julie Simon, LL.M. '83, who will speak about "Sagen um den Wiener Stephansdom".

3.3 Saturday, June 21st, 2003

The morning will be spend with breackfast and our annual membership meeting will start at 9:15 at Hotel Mercure Wien City. The agenda you may find here.

At 11:00 we will board a bus for a short sightseeing tour around Vienna.

Lunch is planned for 12:30 at the "Hafenrast" restaurant near Klosterneuburg.

Around 14:00 we will go on by bus to Klosterneuburg for a guided tour though the "Stift Klosterneuburg", after which we will return to Vienna for a walk around the center and finish the afternoon in a typical Viennese "Kaffehaus".

For the evening dinner will meet at 19:00 at the "Gösser Bierklinik zum güldenen Drachen" (Steindlgasse 4, 1. Bezirk - Innenstadt). Here the menue (without drinks) will cost about EUR 35,--. Vegetarian alternatives can be ordered but the number of vegetarians need to be known about a week ahead of the event. The evenings speaker will be Univ. Prof. Dr. Peter Csendes (Deputy Direktor of the Wiener Landesarchiv) about „Biedermeier und Barock“

3.4 Sunday, June 22nd, 2003

At 9:30 am we will start our traditional "Big Red Brunch" at the Hotel Mercure City Wien. The official end of the weekend will be around 11:00 am. For a "cultural" closing of this years Cornell Weekend there will be the opportunity for a museum visit in the afternoon.

Wolfgang, Julie und Nicholas and the preparation team have completed the final touches of the program and you can download it here. Invitations have been sent now (5/14/2003) by mail.

May 2003 08/05/2003

Please take note for regular spring meeting of the Munich sub-chapter on Thursday, May 08th, 2003, at the Arabella Sheraton Grand Hotel (reached by U4 - Arabellapark Station or via tram to Effnerplatz)

Meeting time is any time after 7:00 p.m. in the "Stuberl" in the Paulaner's resturant (or in the beer garden, weather permitting.) Klaus and Deloyce Conrad will probably try to make it a bit earlier. It will be an informal meeting in our usual "Stammtisch" setting - a chance to catch up on personal and Cornell news and to share our opinions about "this and that"

Meeting time is 7:30 p.m. (Klaus and Deloyce Conrad will probably try to make it a bit earlier.) It will be an informal meeting as usual -- we're hoping to see something of Cornell "hotelies" on site and maybe hear something about their big meeting the end of November.
